A calm teaching order

  1. Say it first. Stretch the word and ask the learner to identify the middle sound.
  2. Build it. Use letter cards or magnetic letters to map one sound to one letter.
  3. Read it. Blend from left to right, then ask the child to use the word in a sentence.
  4. Write it. Dictate one familiar word after the child has read several examples.

Short-vowel CVC words

Short A, E, I, O, and U all have individual word pages. Open a word to find its phoneme breakdown, teacher tip, preview, and six printable downloads.

Choose words with familiar meanings first. Once a learner can blend a few examples, add a word that changes only the first sound so the shared pattern becomes visible.

Three ways to use the list

  • Sound sort: say two words and have the learner point to the vowel they hear.
  • Word-family bridge: compare a CVC word with a stable ending in the word-family collection, such as -et, -in, or -og.
  • One-minute dictation: read a word, hide it, and let the learner build or write it before checking.
